Step-based measurements are estimates. For weird shapes, slopes, or expensive materials, measure once like a civilized caveman.

How to use the mulch
Mulch projects go smoother when the area, depth, and bag size are calculated before the store run. Use this calculator to compare a measured bed or a rough field estimate against the mulch depth you want, then add a buffer for uneven edges, settling, and spreading loss. Two inches is common for refreshing beds; three to four inches may be used when starting a new bed or suppressing weeds.
For best results, measure the bed area, choose the actual bag size printed on the product, and keep the buffer realistic. Irregular beds, trees, slopes, and existing mulch can change the final amount. The project estimate is meant for material planning and quote conversations, not a substitute for a site visit when the job is large or expensive.
Planning notes
- Start with measured dimensions when possible, then use the calculator to compare options.
- Adjust prices to match local suppliers, product labels, delivery fees, and contractor quotes.
- Save the estimate to your project when you want it included in the overall material total.
